An estimated 120 firefighters from across Canada will be in Saugeen Shores this weekend to compete in the 2019 FireFit Championships.
Described as "the toughest two minutes in sports", FireFit brings together would-be and experienced firefighters who face challenges which commonly happen in emergency situations.
The 2019 event, co-hosted by Bruce Power and the Saugeen Shores Fire Department, takes place Saturday and Sunday (July 13-14) at the Port Elgin Main Beach. The competition hasn't taken place in Saugeen Shores since 2016.
Gary Smith, Section Manager, Emergency and Protective Services at Bruce Power explains what people could expect.
"What you'll see is individuals and teams competing in events which include climbing stairs, Hose Hoist, Forcible Entry tools, Running an obstacle course, and finishing up with a dummy drag."
Firefighters will compete in the individual races Saturday, with the team event - made up of 3-5 firefighters - taking place Sunday.
Bruce Power and the Saugeen Shores Fire Department will both have teams in Sunday's competition.
Smith encourages the community to come out and cheer on the first responders and says there is a Junior Firefighters Challenge for boys and girls to mimic what's going on... on the real course, which is a free event.
