Organizers of the MacGregor Point Dryland Sled Dog Derby say it is cancelled.

The races, just outside of Port Elgin, were set to go Saturday and Sunday. (Nov 9 and 10 ) but are not going to happen because of unsafe trail conditions caused by snowfall.

While you might initially think snow would be ideal for sled dog racing, the dryland races involve a musher on a type of bicycle being pulled by a dog team along a dry trail or track.

They say it's an official ruling by the International Federation of Sleddog Sports (IFSS) and the Sleddog Sports Association of Southwestern Ontario (SSASO).

In a media release they say bike and scooter teams would be in danger of injury.
"It was a tough decision to cancel this year's event, but we feel that the safety of our K-9 teammates and ourselves needs to be our top priority."

They derby is expected to return next year on November 8th and 9th.
