Huron OPP Officer Killed

Huron County
by Jon Meyer

A Huron OPP officer has now died after being shot when pulling over an armed suspect near Winthrop in Midwestern Ontario.

Police Commissioner Julian Fantino confirms Constable Vu Pham was shot by the suspect and "immediately incapacitated'' after 10 AM Monday.

Police say Pham -- who lived in Wingham -- died in hospital around 5:30 PM.

Pham -- a 15 year veteran of the force -- was a married father of three sons.

Police escorted his family to London to be by his side at the hospital.

Fantino says other officers in the area confronted the 70 year old suspect, who was also shot and is in hospital.

Fantino says Constable Pham was only doing his job as the incident happened after a routine traffic stop -- but he wouldn't elaborate further.

The incident happened at about 10:30 AM between Winthrop and Walton.

Eyewitnesses say 15 to 20 shots were exchanged between an officer and the suspect from across a two-lane rural road.
